Make me…
‘Make me…’ is a social documentary that explores the complex relationship Blacks and Asians have with skin bleaching and hair cosmetics, where anxiety, aspirations, identity and self-image fuse into the rather emotive, tabooed and politically charged subject of race and identity that has seen a recent resurgence. The images explore the vulnerability of some Blacks and Asians who face daily an endless state of ambivalence in this global village dominated by Western culture media.
Born in Togo, Kossi Kunakey holds MA in Contemporary Francophone Cinema from Roehampton Institute and has taught photography in London for 14 years. Kunakey’s critical visual explorations of displaced social groups have culminated in a series of projects in Europe and Africa.
