Scenes of a Badly Remembered Past
(Sticky Moments)
For this work the artist draws on unpleasant personal memories linked by the theme of sexual aggression. Those so-called ‘sticky moments’ encountered by many young women traversing the gulf between childhood and adolescence or simply attempting to move through the world as autonomous beings.
Holloway combines text and image in order to provide the memories with tangible form whilst retaining their ambiguities. Words act as an internal vocal memory moving forward and back over half recalled information, certainty fades and grows with each declaration. The image holds those visual elements that trigger recollection. Throughout the work the artist explores her ambivalence to the events and the inherent anomalies within autobiographical memory.
Holloway began her photography at Goldsmith’s College London. After working in the film industry she returned to study at Camberwell College of Arts. She has exhibited in London and is active in London’s underground art and music scene.
